After the incident when incompletely treated wastewater flowed into the Curonian Lagoon, AB Grigeo Klaipėda initiated several different projects which would diminish the environmental impact, reduce sewage pollution and contribute to solving the problem of odours.
According to Tomas Eikinas, the General Manager of AB Grigeo Klaipėda, the total investments in environmental projects planned in the course of several years by the Company amounts to EUR 3.5 million.
AB Grigeo Klaipėda plans to implement two environmental projects devoted to reducing pollution emissions, discharges and wastes, as well as odour emissions, that are generated in the course of economic activities.
‘First of all, we shall seek to modernise Dumpiai wastewater treatment facilities: to cover wastewater tanks and ozonize odours, which would allow odour emissions from the tanks to be minimized by up to 98 per cent’, Tomas Eikinas says.
Another project proposed by the Company is a sludge dewatering facility – a decanter, installed in Dumpiai wastewater treatment plant; having installed it, sludge that forms in the wastewater treatment plant would not be composted, it would be dewatered and then given over to waste managers.
‘The Company acquired all necessary facilities last year. At the present time the environmental impact of these facilities is being assessed, which takes quite a long time. The Klaipėda City Municipality posed a lot of questions about that project, and after a solution has been found to them, coordination processes should draw to a close’, Tomas Eikinas outlined the plans of the Company for modernising wastewater treatment facilities.
After the wastewater treatment facilities of the Company located in Dumpiai have been connected with the wastewater treatment facilities of Klaipėdos vanduo, AB Grigeo Klaipėda would carry out the initial wastewater treatment, and would transfer wastewater to Klaipėdos vanduo for the final wastewater treatment.
All in all, AB Grigeo Klaipėda plans to invest about EUR 1.5 million in the projects improving the environmental situation in Dumpiai.
All necessary works are expected to be completed by the end of June of the current year.
Another project proposed on the initiative of AB Grigeo Klaipėda is an anaerobic bioreactor in the industrial territory of the Company’s factory at the following address: 2 Nemuno street, in Klaipėda. This technologically advanced facility would enable wastewater odour emissions generated in the course of economic activities to be significantly reduced.
Investments in this project planned by the Company would amount to as much as EUR 2 million.
This is a highly innovative and modern environmental measure. Biogases would be produced from organic pollutants precipitated in wastewater in that facility, which later would be converted into thermal energy, which is treated as ‘green’ energy protecting the environment’, Tomas Eikinas explains.
Using biogases, which is a renewable energy resource, instead of fossil fuels, ambient air pollution is reduced, that is, smaller amounts of CO2 gases that cause emissions of greenhouse gases are emitted into the ambient air.
According to Tomas Eikinas, initial wastewater treatment and ‘degassing’ in the anaerobic bioreactor would markedly decrease the existing level of ambient air pollution with odours and the pollutant load of wastewater treatment facilities in wastewater treatment facilities belonging to AB Grigeo Klaipėda located in the village of Dumpia.
Wastewater that has reached Dumpiai would be further treated in modernised wastewater treatment facilities using the newly installed decanter.
‘At the present time we have submitted selection information concerning the assessment of the environmental impact of the anaerobic bioreactor and are waiting for answers. After we have received the approval or observations and comments on its environmental impact, we would be able to plan deadlines for the implementation of this project in detail’, Tomas Eikinas spoke about the state of the project coordination.
